Bacteria party at Manchester Science Festival
News item: 20 October 2010
As part of the Manchester Science Festival, a group of Pharmacy undergraduates are hosting a 'Bacteria Party', a highly interactive event concerning bacterial infections and its treatment, on Monday 25 October 2010, 3-7pm.
The event will bring together a range of interactive activities as well as providing the opportunity to use microscopes and explore 3D modelling. Visitors will progress through a number of 'science stations', including:
- Gruesome images of what bacteria are capable of doing
- Preventing and recognising symptoms of meningitis when you go to university
- Are there really more bacteria on me than there are people on the planet?
- Are you really washing your hands properly?
- 3D modelling of antibiotics to help with A level chemistry
- An in-depth understanding of antibiotic resistance
The event organisers, the 'B-team', had to pitch their idea to a Dragons' Den-style panel of young people, and the Bacteria Party was chosen over three other possible events. Once the final event had been chosen, the Dragons worked with the winning team to organise the day.
The 'B-team' includes Balazs Adam, Emma Cottam, Farah Haque, Fiona Henderson, Abi Hughes, Saambra Lian, Lauren Nichol and Ciara Rathbone. On the day, each student will be transformed into a different bacteria and will be on hand to guide visitors through the activities.
