Biotech competition deadline looms

29 May 2009

The deadline for entries to the 13th Biotechnology YES competition is fast approaching.

Last year, five PhD students from the School of Pharmacy took part in the competition, which encourages young researchers to commercialise bioscience ideas by pitching them against each other.

Seventy-three teams of bioscientists competed in the 2008 round, with Natalie Burrows, Amy Chadwick, Amy Adlard, Matthew Humphries and Katharine Scott representing Manchester.

The team created KaleidoCHEM Solutions and based their business plan on a cell diagnostic product called MycoSight.

A regional round was held in Manchester and the team was selected as one of 14 UK finalists.

The final was held in London in December and, despite narrowly missing out on an award, all thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

The deadline for entries to the 2009 competition is June 17.
