Trust announces Practice Research Award winner
20 August 2009
University of Manchester's Dr Darren Ashcroft has been announced winner of the 2009 Practice Research Award, which is sponsored by the Pharmacy Practice Research Trust (the Trust). The award will be presented at the British Pharmaceutical Conference (BPC2009) on Monday 7 September, where Dr Ashcroft will deliver a 30 minute lecture on his prize-winning research.
The BPC Practice Research Award is presented annually to an individual who has made a significant contribution to the field of pharmacy practice research and has the potential to become a leader in their field. Dr Ashcroft, Reader in Medicines Usage and Safety at the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Science, will receive the award in recognition of his work into medicines usage and in particular quality and safety.
Dr Ashcroft said: “Being told that I had won this award means a lot to me. I have been undertaking a programme of research in this area over the last 10 years or so. Drug-related morbidity represents a substantial burden on limited health care resources and my early research, which focused on quality and safety in pharmacy practice, has matured into a major research theme. This award recognises my work in the UK and its development into a wider European context.”
Trust chairman, Marshall Davies, who will be presenting the award, said: ”Dr Ashcroft’s research including the evidence base built up from work across the country and subsequent developments in Europe is contributing significantly to patient safety. This recognition of his work reflects well the Trust’s objective of promoting and developing the field of pharmacy practice research.”
