Manchester professor appointed new trustee at Pharmacist Support
Press release: 31 January 2012
Pharmacist Support – the independent charity for pharmacists and their families, former pharmacists and pharmacy students – has announced that Professor Peter Noyce will join its board of trustees.
As Professor of Pharmacy Practice at The University of Manchester since 1991, Professor Noyces' time at Manchester has included spells as Head of School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences and Director of the Centre for Pharmacy Postgraduate Education (CPPE). In 2011, he was appointed Co-Chair of the Modernising Pharmacy Careers Programme Board of Medical Education England (MEE). He was formerly Deputy Chief Pharmacist for England, and also a member of the Medicines Commission. Peter was awarded the Charter Gold Medal of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society in 2004, and was conferred a CBE for services to healthcare in 2008.
Commenting on his appointment, Professor Noyce said: "It is a hallmark of a mature profession that it maintains a facility to support colleagues in times of need. The Pharmaceutical Society within Great Britain has an acknowledged history of benevolent activity which more recently has been fashioned into a well-organised independent Charity providing an effective range of help and support to pharmacists: Pharmacist Support. I was delighted to be appointed as a Trustee this year to help sustain and develop this activity."
Joining Professor Noyce on the board of trustees are Steve Churton, Professor Denis Anthony and Richard Fass. January 2012 marks the start of a three-year term for the four new recruits, who join existing board members David Thomson, Arthur Williams, Doreen Laity, Leonard Brookes and Prof David Johns.
"Our new members bring a wealth of expertise to the Board and are worthy successors to our departing colleagues," said Chairman David Thomson. "I am very much encouraged and optimistic for the Charity as we progress into 2012 and beyond."

Notes for editors:
Pharmacist Support is the country's leading independent charity for pharmacists and is funded by donations from pharmacists.
Pharmacist Support was previously known as The Benevolent Fund of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain and became an independent charity in 2006 when governance transferred from the Council of the RPSGB to a board of 8 Trustees. The charity was re-launched in 2008 to reflect the modern day needs of today's pharmacists and legally changed its name to Pharmacist Support in January 2011.
- In 2012 board membership increased to nine, to not only enhance the expertise available to the charity but also enable a continuous turn over (of three trustees') year on year.
- The Board now consists of 9 members, 6 of whom come from a pharmacy background and 3 of whom are lay members.
Pharmacist Support's services are available to all pharmacists and their dependents, former pharmacists, preregistration trainees and pharmacy students. Note: Pharmacists do not need to be members of the RPS, nor do they need to be on the register at the time of the enquiry to use the charity's services (they could, for example, be taking a break or have been removed for whatever reason).
All services are FREE and confidential and include; Listening Friends (a stress helpline), financial assistance, specialist advice in debt, benefits and employment law, an information and enquiry line and addiction support (via the Health Support Programme).
