Widening participation: Pharmacy in Primary Schools (PIPS)

The Pharmacy in Primary Schools (PIPS) widening participation (WP) project is part of an overall programme of activities within the School of Pharmacy and Faculty of Medical and Human Sciences.

The university wants the best students and knows that talented and able students can come from all kinds of backgrounds. The aim of widening participation is to make sure the Faculty’s student body is as diverse as possible.

Why a primary WP project?

The specific aims of the PIPS WP Project are to help the University of Manchester to address aspects of inequity of access to higher education, particularly in relation to social background, at a formative age.

It also aims to directly support the progression of a talented group of young people, currently under-represented in higher education into the University of Manchester or another research intensive institution.

The project is designed to raise awareness of higher education, build pupils' aspirations and expectations around continuing in education post-sixteen years of age, and to introduce Pharmacy as a viable career option, through a range of interactive and fun activities.

Who is involved?

In 2007, the project targeted pupils in Year 6 in the Wythenshawe area of Manchester. Wythenshawe is the only area of Manchester where access to higher education is below 21%, one of the most deprived Manchester wards.

Participants were all at primary schools that fed secondary schools on the MHS Faculty WP programme. Thirty pupils per school took part, selected for participation by teachers because of their talents.
