Systematic review of hospital admissions associated with adverse drug reactions
July 2008
The Annals of Pharmacotherapy have published a detailed systematic review prepared by members of the CIP team (Chuenjid Kongkaew, Peter Noyce and Darren Ashcroft) that examined the prevalence of hospital admissions associated with adverse drug reactions (ADRs).The systematic review included 25 observational studies conducted in 14 countries and involving 106,586 patients. The review found that there was wide variation in reported prevalence, with an overall median rate of 5.3% of hospital admissions associated with ADRs (IQR 2.7 - 9.0%). Higher rates were found in elderly patients likely to be receiving multiple medications for long-term illnesses. The review also found that the methods used to detect ADRs were likely to explain much of the variation in reported rates between the different studies.
