Research
My main research interests are the prescribing process in secondary care and its outcome and this is reflected in the research with which I have been involved.
- Prescribing errors – together with Professor Tim Dornan and five others, I have investigated the prevalence and causes of prescribing errors made by foundation year 1 doctors, concentrating on the interplay between doctors’ educational backgrounds and factors in the practice environment. This research was funded by the General Medical Council.
- Impact of the electronic patient record (EPR) - together with Professor Cantrill and others, a pilot study has been undertaken in the North-West to investigate the impact of electronic prescribing in secondary care on prescribing errors. The impact of the EPR on the work of clinical pharmacists was assessed by a PhD student in Manchester. A further PhD student investigated the use of data from electronic prescribing systems to improve the methodology of assessing the epidemiology of prescribing errors
- Prescribing by pharmacists - funding was obtained to explore, using qualitative interviews, the views and experiences of pharmacists who become supplementary prescribers, focusing on perceptions of changing roles, responsibilities and accountability. A current PhD student is continuing this line of enquiry with non-medical prescribers generally and an MPhil student is investigating successful models of pharmacist prescribing in community pharmacy.

Biography
I am Reader in Pharmacy Practice in the School of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences, splitting my time between The University of Manchester and Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust, the latter for one day per week. My main areas of research interest are the prescribing process in secondary care and its outcome and, in particular, prescribing conducted by junior doctors and supplementary or independent prescribers.
After registering as a pharmacist in Northern Ireland in 1983, I worked for 2½ years in a mission hospital in Zambia, Central Africa, before returning to Belfast in 1986 to begin an MSc in Hospital Pharmacy. I worked as a clinical pharmacist in Hope Hospital, Salford, until the lure of research drew me to do my PhD in the School of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Manchester, in 1994. I continued to work there as a post-doctoral researcher after securing a 3-year post-doctoral fellowship and took up an appointment clinical lecturer in 1999 and was promoted to clinical senior lecturer in 2006 and reader in 2011. I was invited to be Visiting Professor in the Department of Pharmacy, University of Uppsala, Sweden from 2003 to 2008.
