Research

Individual research has concentrated on outcomes assessment of medicines use and safety within clinical practice. This has mainly, but not exclusively, centred around the use of antimicrobials

NIHR Funding: short-listed Programme Grant “Safe and Optimal Antimicrobial use Programme (SOAP). Short-listed research for Patient Benefit Grant “To examine the relationship between antimicrobial usage and resistance in English NHS hospitals and primary care and to look in detail at data in the North West in order to promote their effective use”. Co-applicant on SDO grant bid with Imperial College on the economic evaluation of antimicrobial resistance.

Current PhD sponsorship and supervision of projects to determine antimicrobial use in hospitals in the North West and the relationship to rates of Clostridium difficile infections; evaluation of a self assessment toolkit for antimicrobial stewardship in hospitals.

Biography

Professor Jonathan Cooke is Director of Research and Development and Clinical Director for Medicines Management and Pharmacy at the University Hospital of South Manchester NHS Foundation Trust. He holds an honorary Chair, through academic promotion, in the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Manchester. He is an external examiner to Trinity College, Dublin, Imperial College London, Queen's University Belfast and Aston University, Birmingham and is a panel reviewer for the MRC and the Northern Ireland Office.

He is author to over 100 peer reviewed publications and reviews and chapters of standard text books. He is an editorial board member for a number of journals.

He is a member of the Department of Health Advisory Committee on Antimicrobial Resistance and Healthcare Associated Infection (ARHAI).

He is a member of the Department of Health/HPA Joint Working Group on Clostridium difficile Infection, Prevention and Management and has served as a Member of the Department of Health Specialist Advisory Committee on Antimicrobial Resistance (SACAR) as Chair of the Prescribing sub-Committee.

He is a Member of the Steering Group for the NHS Centre for Reviews and Dissemination Economic Evaluation Database at the University of York and has been a rapporteur to the European Commission.

He is on the Persons Appointed Panel to the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). He is a former Board Member and Trustee for the British Society for Antimicrobial Chemotherapy.

He is on the national panel for three subgroups for the European Surveillance of Antimicrobial Consumption (ESAC 3) under an EU grant from the European Centre for Disease Control (ECDC).

He attained a BPharm (Pharmacology Special), MPharm (Clinical Pharmacy) and PhD in School of Studies in Pharmacy and Pharmacology at the University of Bradford and had previous NHS positions in Bradford and Leeds Hospitals. He has a number of national and international awards in Medicines Management and Pharmacy including

Award for an outstanding contribution to the literature of research in hospital pharmacy of the American Society of Hospital Pharmacists, Research and Education Foundation.
Chemist & Druggist Award for the best paper presented at the British Pharmaceutical Conference.
Duncan Flockhart Award for best paper presented at the annual conference of the United Kingdom Clinical Pharmacy Association.

Pharmaceutical CARE Award for research into medicines management in nursing homes (Winner)

Pharmaceutical CARE Award for a web based reporting into medication errors (Runner up)

Finalist for the NHS Northwest TrusTec Innovation Award.
